Youth Information

As a British Cycling Go-Ride Club Mark affiliated club we observe best practice in child protection, coaching and competition, equity and club management. For parents of young cyclists, it provides confidence to know that their child is safe, well-managed and is in an exciting place to be.

From March to November we hold regular youth coaching sessions at the Chelmer Valley Park and Ride on a Saturday morning from 9am. We have a designated area at the rear of the car park coned off for riding in a safe traffic free environment. These are partly skills based with some fitness and racing thrown in. Occasionally we open the older youth second session from 10:30 to include Woman (all ages). These sessions are run by club coach Russell Tribley who is BC qualified at Level 2 for Road/Time Trial, Track and Cyclo Cross. There is a separate Facebook page providing photos and details by going to Youth Cycle Coaching - Chelmsford

Whilst as a club we do not currently organise any youth races, we are affiliated to British Cycling and youth riders can join British Cycling obtaining a membership and racing licence allowing them to compete in age related mass start circuit races at various local purpose built venues such as Hog Hill near Hainault, Lea Valley Velopark in Stratford and the Cyclo Park near Gravesend.

From 12 years and older youth riders can ride time trials on the open road. We run weekly 10 and 25 mile time trials on various local courses from April to end August on a Tuesday evening. Some 10 mile time trial events comprise two laps of a 5 mile course and younger riders can start by riding 1 lap only and receive a time before progressing later in the year to the full distance.

During the winter youth members regularly taking part in the Eastern Cyclo Cross League which runs from September to February. We have a number of small cyclo cross bikes and Mountain bikes that can be borrowed for these races which is one of the best introductions to competitive cycling. Go to the EasternCross Facebook group or for more details.

In the summer why not try Grass Track racing. This is riding fixed wheel track bikes on a flat grass track (usually school running field size). Again lots of local events in Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordsire throughout the summer capped off with the Mildenhall Cycling Festival held across the August Bank Holiday weekend with a packed programme suitable for youths.

Chelmer CC are also part of the Eastern Track School which comprise a cluster of clubs from the Eastern Region providing coaching for youths to ride and race on a banked track velodrome. We start in April (Sunday afternoons) on the outside velodrome at Welwyn Garden City where track bikes can be hired on the day. These sessions are aimed at absolute novices to riding a fixed wheel bike (with no brakes) on a banked track. There are typically 4 groups with riders progressing up to the next group once they have mastered the various skills required. After a summer of riding outdoors we then take the riders indoors for the winter (Sunday mornings) to the Lea Valley Olympic Velodrome in Stratford where they can comfortably and safely ride the velodrome where Team GB won all those medals in 2012. Once competent there are various Youth Omnium series of races at Welwyn, Herne Hill and Lea Valley to compete in plus the London Youth Track League on alternative Thursday evenings during the winter.

Finally if all you want to do is ride your bike and not race, we offer a ‘Family’ ride on most Saturday afternoon’s - a leisurely group ride from the Chelmer HQ of about 25 miles including a tearoom stop mid way keeping away from the main roads where possible; but being on the road we encourage parents to be present and a level of road awareness and fitness to ride this distance at 12-14mph.

Chelmer Cycling Club also offers/subsidises club clothing for all youth riders (Under 16) at a 50% price reduction.
